Winn Dixie Pastrami

Store Bought Pastrami

You know where to go for a pastrami sandwich, or at least you can do some research and find a good local choice. You can buy pastrami at the Deli where you like to get your sandwich, but who wants to pay their prices? Katz's Deli in NYC gets $25/lb for their pastrami, which is enough for 2 big, fat sandwiches or 3 pretty good sized ones. You shouldn't have to pay over $8 to make a sandwich at home.

Plain pastrami is one of my favorite low carb snacks. A couple of slices; either cold or warmed on the grill, are a great little snack.

Deli Meat Wars

Most people have heard of Boar's Head; if you ask the average Joe they'll identify Boar's Head as being a superior product. But to me, they're to Deli Meats what Ruffino is to Chianti; they do a lot of advertising to build name recognition so people think they're good. Publix sells Boars head. Just for the record, Publix pastrami stinks. It doesn't even taste like Pastrami; it's too lean.

The two best cold cut brands are Thuman's and Dietz & Watson. If you've never had Dietz & Watson turkey breast, you're really missing out. Something odd but True is that Winn Dixie sells Dietz & Watson deli meats. It's where I go to get my pastrami.

Now if you live around here you know about Winn-Dixie. They're crumby stores. Everything about Publix is better than Winn-Dixie except for the Self-Serve Checkout, and as it turns out, the Deli Meat. Of course this is Winn-Dixie, so 3 times out of 4 they don't have any pastrami in the Deli Section. They always have the packages, but you don't want that. The packages are cut too thick and there's some preservative that ruins it.

If they do have it in the Deli, get it sliced thin. Unlike Publix, they don't throw away the outside slice or give the first good slice to you for a free taste. But today it was on sale for $6.99/lb, which is a steal.

Winn-Dixie Pastrami

This is the best non-deli pastrami I've found anywhere. Remember the name: Dietz & Watson. It's good stuff.

I tried the pastrami from Winn Dixie a few weeks ago, and other then dealing with the fairly incompetant deli workers, it was very good. Yesterday they had the Deitz and Watson corned beef on sale so I figured I'd try it. The Deli worker had no clue what corned beef was so I had to point to it in the window. They didn't have one already opened so she had to come around and get the one out of the display case. I guess it had been in their for quite some time because when I got home and tasted it, it was rancid and beyond spoiled. One would think they worker would have noticed this when they cut it as the smell was unbearable. One more reason to go to Publix's deli as they let you taste it beforehand. They did refund my money though. Will Winn Dixie ever get their act together, I doubt it..
