Cons

Subs are messy

Critic's Review

I hadn't been to a LaSpada's for a long time; when I first moved here and you could stuff the ballots for Zagat's and places like LaSpada would show up in the top 10 restaurants in Fort Lauderdale; it's a bit more difficult now and there are more choices, but with other choices like the Lunchroom this place is still a very good deal.

From the outside I thought for a second that they might have closed this location; no cars and you can't really see the Open sign at an angle. It was after 3p so not exactly prime sub eating hour.

LaSpada's Subs interior

I ordered a small Italian special with the works; hot peppers on the side. They still ask if you want mayo and what kind of mustard and bread, so there's no simple way to order.

Spada counter

When they first opened this location they had real amateurs making the sandwiches, but they've weeded out the posers; it's a fairly mechanical process. Still no banana peppers; must be something religious.

The large is enough for 3 people; the small is more than I want to eat in one sitting. It comes wrapped in about a square yard of paper.

An unwrap reveals the sandwich.

LaSpada Italian Sub

Pretty much the same deal as 10 years ago; I think they slice the meat a big thinner, but it's still a decent sub for under $8.

Spada side

I will warn you that it's a messy eat; it's hard to keep the whole thing together. While they wrap the ham around the stuff; it all tries to come out when you eat it.

I've never thought LaSpada was the best subs, but they're good. Aside from the pre-measured meat pack, the insides seem pretty random. The tomatoes were nice and ripe which is always a plus.

Conclusion

10 years later you go into a LaSpada and you get the same thing you got before. It's the way restaurants are supposed to be.

Review 7/6/2011

LaSpada's Original Hoagies is now open on SE 15th Ave in Fort Lauderdale. While the "official" address is in the Southport Shopping Center on SE 17th street, the store is actually located on a strip mall section on SE 15th Ave. LaSpada is known for having out of the way locations; but people find them.

This place is a bit nicer than some others inside; it sort of reminds me of a Jimmy John's with a black and red color scheme. But the big problem with this place is that the sandwich makers don't have the same pizzazz as the others; certainly not the same as the one in Lauderdale by the sea.

Their signatures can be a bit annoying as well as entertaining. The first time I went to one of these places I thought it was interesting. But even after I told the girl exactly what I wanted, she still asked if I wanted each and every ingredient.

They seem to put an inordinate amount of stuff on it; the meat is measured but they pile on the lettuce and peppers. The resulting sandwich is big, but unbalanced. There were way too many peppers on this.

LaSpada's Italian Special

They lose half a star for not having banana peppers. Luckily I had some in the fridge. A good, but not great sandwich. They don't have it down at this location quite yet.

I ordered a turkey sub, the meat they cut was more than generous, but once the sandwich was made with the toppings they added another load of meat which was totally unnecessary. Way too much meat. And they wonder why Americans are fat?
