Critic's Review
It's funny how things go sometimes; when you expect something and something completely different turns out to be the case. I went to the Smokehouse Grill and Wingery, formerly Boca Wings, craving some grilled wings. The pictures on their site looked so good, and the reviews raved.
The place is all wood and they even have a bar. They have a $1 draft special all day; it's not a bad little place.
I saw on their website that they have a lunch special until 4pm where I could get 1/3 rack of baby back ribs, 5 wings, a side and a soft drink for $11.25. Pretty typical pricing, although most places give 2 sides. I don't really want soda and they won't give you a bottle of water, so I passed on the drink. I did take out, and it smelled really good in the car.
The packaging left much to be desired as the wing sauce was all over the bag. Luckily no leaks. Looking at everything, it looked pretty good.
What was surprising was how good the ribs were. They were fall-off-the-bone tender and very good. The bones literally slipped off the meat, which was finger-licking good. Even the crust was flavorful and edible. They were just plain good.
The wings however, were disappointing. They were grilled, but not cooked through. They were about 1/2 cooked, and raw wings are not good. I had to cook them a bit myself before I could eat them. The sauce is post cooking, so the wings themselves had no real flavor; they tasted like plain grilled wings.
So I went for great wings, and I got great ribs and lousy wings. All in a day's work.
