Critic's Review

Andrew's is the new kid on the block; a block so fickle that Moquila couldn't even survive long enough to make it into the Season. There's a lot of restaurants in this neighborhood; Andrew's defines itself as a neighborhood place to hang out and have some "Contemporary" Cuisine.

Andrew's opens at 4pm, and its a pretty nice place. There's an indoor/outdoor bar that's basically 3 sections: an outdoor window, and 2 indoor sections separated by a big column. For watching a game, they have big, bright TVs that are a pleasure to watch from any seat at the bar.

When I first entered all of the games were on commercial so I had to find my game. I knew I was in Boca when I asked a dude sitting at the bar which game was on and he didn't even acknowledge that I had asked a question. Ah, NY I don't miss you at all.

The restaurant has a steakhouse clubby feel; with red leather booths and dark wood paneling. There's a big chandelier on one side of the room; the other side is more casual.

I asked for a menu and they offered 3 menus; a full menu, a bar menu and a happy hour menu. I was in the mood for wings, and the happy hour menu offered their ancho chili wings with avocado ranch sauce for $5. I asked my server if the portion was much smaller, and he said that they were smaller but still a pretty good portion. I ordered the wings.

Andrews Wings

When 5 hummingbird wings arrived I was a bit disappointed; this was not going to be enough food for me. At least they were only $5. The wings were sticky and sweet; I was expecting some heat from the chili, but none was present. They were more like chinese wings. The dabs of sauce on the plate really didn't have much taste at all; the wings tasted the same with or without the sauce. The little slivers of celery on the place shows that the kitchen here doesn't understand why celery is served with wings; they care more about presentation than they do feeding their guests. The server later admitted it was a pretty meager portion. Strike one on the wings.

Feeling completely unsatisfied, it was still happy hour so I ordered the sliders.

Andrews sliders

Now this was a bit more substantial; not because of the mini-burgers but the good size mound of french fries provided. The sliders are small balls of meat; they were medium-well I'd say and they had no lettuce or tomato; just some marinated red onion. The sliders were OK but I enjoyed the french fries more; crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside.

Unfortunately their web site was designed by someone more familiar with web design than marketing a restaurant; they have a lot of pictures of dishes but no captions to tell you what it is. The website also doesn't work properly if you use a www prefix; there's no wine list nor do they tell you which "selected" beverages are available at happy hour prices.

They have some interesting items on the menu; I could see myself ordering the Wagyu Hanger Steak for $22. Prices seem all over the place; a NY Strip is $38 but Organic Salmon is $23. They don't claim to serve prime beef so I'm not sure why the meat is so pricey compared to other items.

Service here is lacking. The bar can't handle an empty restaurant much less a busy one. Every incoming order seemed like a chore. They just seemed overmatched by seemingly simple requests.
