Critic's Review

In East Boca, where everything is sort of faux ostentatious, a place called "Old Town Tavern" seems intriguing. Sometimes you just get tired of all the stone and marble and the strip malls; Old Town is a big old building on Dixie Highway just a block from US1.

Inside the place is pretty nice; a sports bar setup for the bar with plenty of booths throughout. There are 30- some odd TVs here and they have live music on weekends.

They have an in-house Deli where you can get deli sandwiches like Corned Beef and Pastrami. Their menu has lot of comfort food and sports friendly items like wings, burgers and fish and chips.

The service in here lends itself to question, but I'm not sure if it's entirely the server's fault. I sat down at an unmanned bar and there was no server in sight for a good 10 minutes. The entire place seems to be handled by 2 girls who are so bored out of their minds that they can barely stand up. Apparently, on this Sunday, there were only 2 customers at the bar all day.

I often wonder what places are thinking with their music choices; the place was mostly middle aged people; boca is not particularly disco-y, but the music was decidedly stupid and juvenile. Can't a restaurant manager look around and say to themselves "Do these people in my restaurant like this sort of music we have playing?". And you wonder why places are empty.

I pondered getting a deli sandwich, but I opted for a Guinness and a small order of 5 Jerk Wings. Jerk wings can be hit or miss, and I didn't want to get 10 and find out that I didn't like them. I've had enough of these to know if they're going to be good by looking at them, and when these were delivered I could see that these would be good.

And in fact they were; I'm sorry that I only ordered 5. The seasoning was cooked in; nobody wants to bite into a sprig of rosemary, and they were mildly spicy and pared well with the blue cheese. The celery was limp, however.

There are a few other things on the menu that wouldn't mind trying, including the Sunday special of Prime Rib.
