Review 4/20/16
Agave opened a few weeks ago, but another taco joint in Fort Lauderdale didn't nudge my interest at all. In fact it just made me yawn. I blew off the grand opening, as I almost always do; people don't want to know how well they throw a party. People want to know about the actual experience. Parties are for the fake critics and bloggers at the "newspapers".
I arrived at 2:13 and as usual this plaza was dead. The have a fancy front entrance (where nobody enters); the parking lot is in the back and the back entrance looks a lot like a back entrance. That's the #1 thing wrong with this strip. There's no frontage and the food traffic is only people getting the hand wax at the car wash next door.
A fancy hallway awaits as you enter.
Once inside, you'd better be a taco aficionado. The place is a salad bar of tacos with no explanation of what anything is. Red Sauce, Green Sauce. The menu was different than the one on their web site, which also made things more difficult. I had to start over. The counter person wasn't very helpful when I asked some questions. English wasn't her first language.
I went with once chicken and one pork. One of them in a red sauce. I was so confused that I'm not even sure what I ordered. I know that I avoided anything with "chipotle", becuase chipotle tastes like crap.
I got lettuce and cheese and salsa on the side,A bottle of water. Cheap, like $8. There was only 1 other table occupied, so I decided to eat in rather than smelling up my car.
Time to dig in. Woo-Hoo. Tacos. What a treat.
I took a couple of bites. The tacos were fine. Frankly I'd rather have a bowl of stuff.
The place is pretty nice for a strip bar joint. It has a similar layout to Flash Fire next door. They have fancier chairs here. It you want to feel important while you eat your tacos.
More eating. The salsa roja was decent. Pico de Gallo was pico de gallo. Nothing earth shattering here. Tacos all kind of taste the same to me. Just a spattering of meat. These should be $1.50 if you ask me.
On my way out I snapped a photo. The table in the middle still hadn't been cleared 15 minutes later. I guess the staff was too busy serving all of the customers.
I left out the "front" door to check out Flash Fire to see what was going on there.
Conclusion
This is a really bad location for a restaurant, even though it seems like a good one. Tacos and fancy chairs. This place is better than Lime Fresh or Zona Fresca. Cheap food for people who don't care about real food.
I think all 3 of these places are going to bleed out. Fast Food Plaza. It's just kind of dull.
