Bamboo Beach Tiki Bar fined and shut down

On April 19, the "Tiki Beach Cafe" (the Tiki Bar restaurant at the Ocean Manor Hotel), was hit with another $800 fine, mainly for repeat violations of food stored at temperatures that is not safe. On May 1 they were inspected again, and they shut them down with 33 violations, many of them similar.

Liquid eggs stored at 60 degrees. Raw fish thawing at room temperature. Raw chicken stored at 52 degrees.

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't eat in this place for free. What do they have to do to permanently lose their license to serve food?

A few weeks ago, we reported that Tokyo Blue had been hit with a big fine, something we usually don't pay too much attention to. Now it seems that the "other" restaurant at the Ocean Manor Beach resort was hit with a $3400. fine for things like storing food at 60 degrees. They also were fined in January as was the other place. The pattern is troubling; they don't seem able to do things properly. I'd be wary about eating at this place.

We don't usually report on inspections; people who don't understand how it works can take small violations out of context. There are things that matter, and things that really don't. Violations range from the minute (leaving a cell phone on a counter) to really serious health issues.

Most restaurants have some violations when they get inspected, but I've never seen a fine this high before. And the severity of the violations are troubling, particularly at a restaurant that serves a lot of raw food. In February, the restaurant had a whopping 72 violations, with many of them the kind of thing that matters, like standing water and moldy ice machines. But the big thing is that is seems that the restaurant was using unapproved areas in the basement for food prep and storage. Now if I'm eating well-done steak it might not make so much difference, but when you're serving raw foods and the restaurant isn't taking it's utmost care in preparing and storing it, it's something I want to know about. You can see the inspection reports here.
