Critic's Review

It took fake Steve a long time to get a sign; then they closed up.

Steve's Pizza

Review 4/12/15

Steve's Pizza Fort Lauderdale

Yanks vs Red Sox on Sunday night is back, so I decided to get a pizza. This place has been Hungry Howie's twice and My Pizza II since Zio's sold out and moved down the street to open Bella Serra.

There have been many "Steve's" Pizzas in South Florida, and the location in Cooper City was opened by founder Steven Siegle in 2002. It's now under new management, with some murky lineage. It's owned by Lori Brennan and Jason Beard; the crap stand that was in Dania was owned by a guy named Jason Brennan and this place now owns their web site. Coincidence?

It started badly as I ordered the pizza. The guy on the phone had no idea about anything. They have Med, Lg and XL pizzas but no indication of the size. I asked if XL was 18", and the guy responded "Yeah, I think so". I then ordered an XL pie with sausage (toppings are only $1), and asked that they put it all one 1/2 of the pizza. Note that I didn't ask for a 1/2 topping. It seemed to cause some issue, which surprised me, as it should just be a notation on the ticket. They weren't sure how much it was, the guy said it would be "a bit over $14".

I got there in 15 minutes and the pizza was ready. They have a table and some stools even though they're a No Seating establishment. The pizza was $14.75 plus tax, which seemed like an odd price to me.

I put the pizza in my trunk and took a look. Ugh, this is an XL pizza? When I got home I measured it; 15.5". And they gave me 1/2 topping of sausage for $.75, which wasn't what I wanted. I wanted to pay 25 cents more and get twice as much sausage.

Steves's 15.5" XL Pizza

I was pretty pissed driving home, feeling cheated by these people. It also didn't look like a very good pizza. I was wondering if I was even going to be able to eat it.

As it turned out, it wasn't a terrible tasting pizza. It could have been good IF it was actually an 18" pizza, IF it had more sauce and cheese.

Conclusion

Anyone who thinks that a 16" pizza is XL is either trying to deceive or they know nothing about pizza. Add that to employees who can't give basic information over the phone, and you have a place destined to be gone before too long.

Pizza is like a game of telephone; it may have been good back in 2002; but over time it turns into something very different.

I don't think they're closed - they have a current Groupon running, there's no mention of closure on their Facebook page, and I drove by last night and there were lights on and a bright neon "open" sign flashing.

Well they were closed. Do you see the picture, it was cleared out. Someone probably bought it.

Their license expired on 12/1/16 and there's no change of ownership filed. Could be another rogue vendor in Fort Lauderdale.

That open sign is for the place next door. The place is closed.

That tattered flag they're flying is totally disrespectful. They need to take that down.

They've put up a new flag. They still have a temporary sign so I wonder how committed they are?
