Review 12/30/17

Beehive mailed 1/2 price coupons to people in the neighborhood about a month ago and they expire on 12/31. I've been thinking about stopping in all week, but I couldn't do it. Finally, on Saturday, I stopped in at 3:20p for a bowl of stuff.

I was wondering if I'd be the only one in the place; it's pretty dead downtown on Saturday afternoon, particularly when it's 60 degrees and cloudy.

There were 2 tables when I entered; a couple and a group of four. The place has very few seats inside. It's a strange layout.

They've already changed the menu; the big problem was that one of the things they dropped was the basmati rice, which was what I was planning to have. They only have brown rice now and as we all know:

NOBODY LIKES BROWN RICE

A couple came in behind me; the woman had been here before but the dude had clearly been dragged in. He, like myself, seemed unable to find a combination of food to his liking. I didn't want a salad or sweet potatoes, so I asked for double quinoa, mushrooms and I had planned on eating chicken, but neither of them looked very good. So I went with BBQ Pork with parmesan cheese. As my sauce, I took the green sauce; none of the available choices would have worked with the food I had. I also got a bottle of water.

$5.10 with the half price coupon. So over $10 for this at regular price.

Fetch my own plasticware and grab a seat.

Look familiar? Chipotle for people who pretend to "eat healthy". It's much more impressive close up.

Beehive bowl up close.

Ok, enough clowning. The problem was that it was cold; everything was cold. In 1600 reviews this is the first time I've ever even tried quinoa, so I don't know if hot quinoa is better or not, but I know that cold pork and cold mushrooms aren't good.

So I decided to take this a block away to nuke it in my kitchen. First, I wanted to try the green sauce. They call it "fresh herb"; but it tasted like it looks; like a green blob that came out of.a food processor. Remember those thick green shakes?

I wasn't sure that the take out bowl would survive the microwave; worst case if the plastic melted I'd drop it into the trash. But it withstood 90 seconds in the microwave and came out looking like this.

Beehive Bowl, Microwaved

Much better hot. There were some decent flavors, but the lemon quinoa and the BBQ pork don't really go together. I could see this not sucking if it was on a real plate and you ate the ingredients separately; you know, the way humans ate for millions of years before someone came up with The Bowl.

Conclusion

After visiting their first location, there was nothing new to see here. A very sterile space with the kind of food I don't like to eat. The small bowl I got was plenty of food for lunch; I don't see why I'd want a large bowl. It wasn't bad but I'm genuinely certain that I'll never eat here again even though it's in my neighborhood.

I wonder how well they'll do serving 5 lunches a week. Are you really going to come here for dinner? Even if you're the kind of person who eats Mac & Cheese for dinner, wouldn't you rather have a spinach dip or Mac and Cheese at one of the restaurants for $12 rather than come here for about the same price?

Pre-Opening Ramblings

Another place to get a bowl of Kale and Quinoa is opening in the location previously occupied by CJ's Cafe.

This is their 2nd location; we've reviewed their other location here.

Can't get excited about trying this again.

The 5 star reviews for this place is a commentary on how low class FTL is,

Who are the people leaving 5 star reviews for this place? 2 customers and it's just a bowl. Very Meh.

Good call on the Brown Rice.

the problem with this place is that none of the ingredients go toghether, i found it almost impossible to create a mix that was viable. quality seemed ok, but they over-season everything also. too bad, another dud for us downtowners already in a wasteland of poor food choices. Maybe Pizza Rev on the way can save us from starvation, but i doubt it.

This is true - it is almost impossible to create a bowl where the items go together

A regular bowl is $ 7.95 but it's $ 2.00 more if you want Tuna or Steak, and they provide tomatoes as an "add-on" for $ 1.50, and cheese is an extra $ .50 so a silly regular bowl with one protein and one veggie and now you're up to $11-12 bucks with no drink. Don't think I'd ever go back.
