Critic's Review
I go to Walmart once a week, and I'd skipped lunch so I though I'd check out a cheesesteak. I'd had Charley's at the Broward Mall, but mall venues can be worse than others sometimes.
This place is your typical fake QSR restaurant; really just fast food with more metal and decorations.
The place has cheap furniture with booths that don't look like they could meet Ikea's quality standards. No matter; I was taking out.
It took no more than 5 minutes to make the sandwich; it took me about 10 minutes to get home and open it up.
The way Charley's melts the cheese is different than the real Philly places that sort of integrate the cheese with the meat. I asked for the sandwich with no additional ingredients (do people really put lettuce and tomato on a cheesesteak?). It's kind of a weird looking sandwich with a few flecks of meat on top of the cheese. The peppers were clearly a problem; they looked way too raw.
Of course the proof of the pudding is in the taste, and the sandwich tasted a lot better that it looked. The key to a cheesesteak to me is very soft rolls, and this roll was just right. The onions were all chopped enough and the peppers were a mistake; Other than that not a bad deal for under $6.
Conclusion
Charley's joins Chipotle and McDonalds as food choices at the Walmart center. It's not real cheesesteak, but there's nowhere you can get an authentic cheesesteak in Fort Lauderdale,so this will have to do.
