Critic's Review

I've never been to a Golden Krust before, mainly because from the name it sounds like some sort if bakery and not a place to get food. Golden Krust is a chain-ified fast food concept that is cleaner and better organized than the more traditional places like Jerk Machine and other independent places.

This store is new; there's a couple of table inside but this is take out food. There were 3 people behind the counter and one couple ahead of me and it wasn't clear if you order at the register or get your food and then pay. My obviously confused look didn't draw any explanation; in fact I wondered if anyone knew I was waiting.

Golden Krust Interior

3 dudes than walked in; they clearly knew the people working here, and it appeared that the woman behind the counter was going to take their order while ignoring me. I decided if that were the case I'd walk out without buying anything. I already felt pretty invisible. A moment later the women running the register seemed to notice me (after I'd been standing there a good 10 minutes) and took my order.

I contemplated the oxtail, but at 12.95 I was afraid I wouldn't like it, so I went with the jerk chicken. I didn't want a load of rice, so I asked for no rice and extra "vegetables". I also ordered a spicy beef patty; I'd gotten one years ago at East End Eats that was pretty interesting.

It appeared from the steam table that the Mac and Cheese was popular. I can't see why I'd order that here.

Golden Krust Counter Food

When I got home I opened up the bag:

Golden Krust Spicy Beef Patty Takeout

I think this is the first time I've seen a franchise operation pushing franchises on their bags.

The offering seemed like a lot of food, but the chicken was mostly bones so not as much as it looks; there would be no leftovers here.

Golden Krust Jerk Chicken and Spicy Beef Patty

The "vegetables" is basically a load of cabbage with a spattering of peas, carrots and green beans; actually not too bad.

The patty, while tasty, wasn't what I'd hoped for. These patties are supposedly made with ground beef, but the "meat" in this patty was the consistency of, well, you know. Let's just say that if a blob of this squirted onto the floor you'd be very careful not to step in it.

Not nearly as good as the one I'd had at East End Eats.

Golden Krust Spicy Beef Patty

I initially loaded about half of the container into a bowl thinking that I had enough food for 2 lunches, but the chicken was mostly bones.

Golden Krust Jerk Chicken

The jerk chicken was a loser; there was absolutely zero jerk taste that made it's way into the chicken. All of the jerk was on the skin.

Golden Krust Dry Tasteless Chicken

When you marinate chicken with skin you have to score the skin; jerk seasoning should include scotch bonnet peppers which are very hot; this wasn't hot. This was just dry roasted chicken.

Conclusion

I guess I shouldn't expect much from fast food restaurant, and in that way Golden Krust is just as expected. It's not terrible food; it's just not nearly as good or authentic as I'd hoped.
