Critic's Review
The Mexican Cantina, owned by the same people who own Franco and Vinny's next door is a place I'd never been before. It's an odd location, and they open at 4pm, and I don't usually do Mexican for dinner.
I got caught late today and didn't get out to lunch until after 3, so I figured I'd wait a bit longer and try the place. I got there about 4:30; there was 1 person at the bar who seemed like they might not be a customer.
This is an old time place; chips come out with the menu. They don't leave you at a table to nothing to nosh on. The chips were fresh, but I thought the salsa was a little musty tasting.
The prices here are about what you'd pay for lunch at most places; no gouging here. I ordered a Chile Relleno dinner and an iced tea with extra lemon. No splenda here.
I couldn't understand my server, but I didn't need to. Stuff came when it was supposed to. They play festive music, nothing recognizable. The decorations are mainly provided by Corona.
Maybe 8 minutes and the food came out on a red hot plate. They must have a furnace in the back.
Other than the cheese on the beans which was cooked hard, everything was pretty good. The ranchero sauce was better then most, only mildly spicy. The chile was stuffed with gooey white cheese. Well worth $8.95. Less than $12 for a mexican dinner, with tip.
This is one of those place that's left over from spring break, and it doesn't quite fit the new model. I probably won't be in here ever again, but it's as good as any of the other Mexican choices and it's certainly a good value.
