Pros

Best Sausage in the Area

Cons

A bit More Expensive
May be randomly Closed

Once every couple of months I make a sausage run; Emil's is THE place if you want the best selection. I went a couple of weeks ago on a Friday and they were inexplicably closed; you can read my rant below. Today they were open.

Inside it looks like a good, old time pork store; nothing like the Forest Pork Store on Long Island, but pretty good for South Florida.

Emils inside

They have all of the favorites; I was here specifically for Andouille for gumbo. They had some Spanish Chorizo so I thought I'd see how I liked that. Everyone makes it differently so it's always a crapshoot. They looked decent so I picked one up.

One thing I don't like is that they freeze most of the sausage. They have so many varieties of sausage and they have to make reasonable sized batches. The Andouille is usually frozen, as it was today.

They were also peddling their Pierogies. I decided to pick up 4 just to try them out. I was horrified when the woman handed me 4 of them, frozen. Frozen? The point of fresh pierogies is that they're fresh. Ok, I wasn't going to give them back.

I put them in the fridge and they were thawed a couple of days later and I fried up a couple.

Some people boil them, but I pan fry them in brown butter. I got the potato/cheese version. The brown butter makes them look ugly, but the taste is worth it. Another way is to fry them very slowly in butter; you get a nicer color but I was in a hurry today.

Emils peirogies

These were good, but not great. The filling was VERY loose; usually pierogies have a mashed potatoes consistency. These were also very, very salty. Not bad, but Mrs T's (in your supermarket's freezer section) as just as good.

The chorizo was a much nicer sausage than the once you get in the blister packs at the supermarket. I sliced some up and added it to a chicken and rice dish one evening. I didn't really care for it. It's a little stronger tasting than I like. I like it spicy but not as vinegary.

The Andouille is first rate. Not the best I've ever had, but worth the trip once in a while.

The sausage on the right is store bought johnsonville Andoiulle, which I bought before deciding to trek out the Emils. What we have is real sausage on the left, and a spicy hot dog on the left.

Also notice the color compared to the color of the fresh Andouille I got in a previous review. Freezing is bad.

To All Retail Establishments. This should never happen, particularly on a Friday afternoon before a holiday weekend. A place in business as long as Emil's should have a go-to fill in to man the store if someone is sick or in the case of an emergency.

Emil's Closed with sign

Retail stores have an OBLIGATION to be open during their stated hours. Places that close early or don't bother to open for one reason or another need to be severely admonished.

This place lost an opportunity for free positive publicity and instead is getting negative publicity. This was a long trip for nothing.

If you want a real Keilbasa or any other kind of authentic sausage; this is where you go. This place makes the Old Heidelberg Deli look like a roadside stand.

Emil's Sausages

I get my Andouille here when I'm making gumbo or jambalaya.

1lb Andouille Sausage

This was a shade over a pound and came in at $9 even. It's about the same price as Aidells in the supermarket, and 10x better. Well maybe twice as good. This is the real stuff; nice and spicy. I lucked out and got some fresh out of the smokehouse; they'll freeze it after a day or 2.

Not conveniently located, but the sausage freeze well. I'll use 1/2 of this for some gumbo and freeze the other half and use it the next time.

They also have fresh pierogies, stuffed peppers and cabbage; but this is strictly take out. There's no eating in here.
