Review 2/3/14

Zona Fresca Fort Lauderdale

My idea to review Sheila's was squashed by them not having anything on their menu that I could eat, so I stopped in at Zona Fresca. I figured I'd get a salad, but they really don't have anything that I wanted. They don't have "burrito bowls", so I figured I'd just get a burrito to go and put it in a bowl myself. I ordered the Machaca burrito, which is described as "slowly braised shredded beef with pinto beans, cheese, avocado, lettuce and pico de gallo". You place your order, pay, and then wait for them to call out your number.

Zona fresca inside

I grabbed some of their "fresh" salsa, and when my order was ready headed home. The burrito itself was a good size.

Zonafresca burrito

It would have been pretty hard to eat this like a sandwich. Dumping it out, it was a reasonable portion, but not as much as you get at Chipotle for $1 less.

Zonefresca burrito bowl

A bowl of stuff. The meat was vary bland. There was nothing particularly tasty about this. Not nearly as good as Chipotle.

Review 11/17/10

Zona Fresca Mexican, which translated means tasteless Mexican food, is a fast food joint with cheap pub tables and grossly inadequate parking. The food here is "fresh", as is the trend for some reason in south florida to mimic Mexican food without any of the things that make it good; like cheese and sour cream. I'm sorry, but a taco with only meat and onions is not a taco. I don't really care that the sauces are fresh; I want them to taste good. If people want health food they can cook themselves or go to whole foods or something.

It's a real fast food interior; I wouldn't want to eat in here.

Zona Fresca Counter

The tacos here are nothing special; you can go to Alegria if you want authentic tacos; not here. There is one anomaly; the baja fish tacos. First of all, the fish is a fried filet, not unlike fish and chips, which seems odd at a "fresh" mexican place. It comes with lettuce, fresh tomatoes and a "special" sauce. And man oh man is it good!

Zonafresca tacos

On another visit I had the Chili Rellenos, which is served with rice and beans and pico de gallo.

Zonafresca chilirelleno

It was disappointing on a number of levels. The portion of rice was small. The chilis are stuffed with a relatively small amount of cheese and nothing else. The chiles weren't battered. No sauce. Its just not a very good version of the dish. I ate one pepper as a snack and I was wholly unimpressed. The next day I had the leftovers and I made a sauce for the peppers by sauteing some Maggie's Medium Salsa mixed with tomato sauce. It was MUCH better with the sauce.

So what we have here is bad tacos, bad chili relleno and crazy good fish tacos; and the fish tacos are breaded with a creamy sauce. The non-healthy stuff is the only stuff that tastes good. Go Figure.
