Critic's Review

I'd never been to Tokyo Sushi, mainly because they used to close at 2pm and I never want to deal with lunch hour or eating in a restaurants that's sweeping up at 1:30pm. The new owners now have an inept web site and a poor online presence, but they're open continuously.

It wasn't clear if I could just sit down or I was supposed to wait to be seated; they don't have a hostess; a server came by and sat me at a table. There's a big sushi bar here but nobody really wants to eat at a sushi bar in 2019.

The place is one small room with no booths or privacy anywhere.

I ordered an iced tea and pondered the lunch menu. Tea was delivered with no straw; I had to wait a few minutes to get a straw.

The little pitcher for refills is a great idea; no waiting.

I ordered one of the box lunches; the menu says the boxes come with soup and salad; she brought out some foul smelling miso soup.

"No, I don't want that. I don't like Miso Soup", as I pushed the bowl away.
"It comes with it", she replied, and sped away.

Since she left the soup, I took a taste, knowing full well that it was going to taste like, well, miso soup. Soak dirty socks in water for 15 minutes, boil and serve. The smell was annoying me.

I was hoping I'd get the salad, but the salad is part of the box.

I thought I was getting more sushi than this. The salad was ice cold and slathered in the only dressing they have in Japan (apparently), ginger slop. Why does every sushi restaurant in every city give you a choice of miso soup or a bad salad with ginger dressing? It's so stupid. Imagine if every steakhouse only had ranch dressing and corn chowder. Sushi restaurants are run by idiots with no imagination.

I had pushed the soup to the end of the table, but my server had no interest in taking the soup.

The sashimi was "ok", nothing special. No sauces offered; just the table soy sauce. I had to ask for a fork; can you eat a salad with chopsticks? I looked around the room and while 1/2 of the people were using chopsticks, I didn't see 1 person using them correctly. It's presumptuous to think that people in Fort Lauderdale can eat an entire box without a fork.

The shrimp tempura were good, but the vegetable were a waste. Broccoli, ok, but tempura carrots? tempura red pepper?

I tried the carrot but it just didn't work.

The worst thing on the plate was the teriyaki. The chicken had no taste at all; it was like they just poured some soy sauce over chicken, onions and carrots.

I wasn't eating the rice; I asked for my check, and the server dropped off the check without removing anything from the table. Note that the soup was never taken away.

How about clearing some space so I can sign the check?

This was probably the worst Sushi Lunch Box I've ever had; 4/5 filler and just a bit of sushi. What I got wasn't worth close to the $18 I paid for it.

My first and last visit to Tokyo Sushi is now on record. This place doesn't measure up to other choices.
