Critic's Review
Fockers has left the building.
*****
I'd heard of Fockers Deli, and when I found myself out that way it caught my eye. They also had a girl in the street with a sign advertising their $2.99 special. I wondered why a good NY / Chicago deli would need a girl in short shorts in the street like some two-bit cell phone franchise.
Walking into the Deli, theres a big counter with a few chairs and lots of pictures of thick stuffed sandwiches and loaded up hot dogs. They claim to be both a New York and Chicago style deli, which seems a bit fishy to me. On their web site they have a picture of a sandwich with big fresh pickles. Too bad you don't get a sandwich like that.
I ordered a chicken salad on rye, which comes with a side. I ordered the cole slaw.
Well I don't know about Chicago, but in New York this place would be burned down within the first month for a sandwich like this. The chicken salad is just shredded chicken and mayo (definitely not Hellman's either), and the serving is about 1/3 of what you get at Pomperdale's. No celery or carrots. The cole slaw is super sweet, one taste and in the garbage fare, and the pickle is a limp, could-they-spare-it quarter spear.
Next time you're in the neighborhood, keep driving. That's what I should have done.
