Critic's Review

The Cancun Mexican Grill, formerly of Hollywood, has opened a new location on N Andrews Avenue in Fort Lauderdale where a Steak and Ale used to be. Its right across the street from Hooters. Initially, I wondered why Hooters was packed and the parking lot here was fairly empty. It didn't take me long to find out.

The place has kind of an odd layout. It looks really big from the outside, but inside there are a lot of hallways and not a whole lot of eating space. You walk through a hallway which opens to a room with a rickety bar and room with a strange layout. There's a big TV on the wall opposite the bar, with some tables in between so you'd have to look right across a table to watch. The foot railing on the bar is in disrepair; odd for a new opening. They seemed to have slapped a coat of paint on the outside, but much of the inside was still shoddy.

The service here is very strange. The staff doesn't seem to speak much English. The bartender kept disappearing for long periods of time. Finally I get a menu, some very colorful chips and salsa. But the salsa is brown. Is it supposed to be brown? Whats in Salsa that would make it brown? I'm really afraid to ask. It doesn't taste very good so there's no reason. Better safe than sorry.

They have lunch specials for $6.95. its not a very extensive menu. You can get a taco, or an enchliada, or a burrito. You get the pattern. All of a sudden I wasn't very hungry. I ordered the enchilada with chicken.

Cancun enchilada

As you can see, it appears that they puree their refried beans to the consistency of chocolate mousse. The entire dish was luke warm. I can't even guess how they prepared it; maybe they just melted the cheese in the microwave. The enchilada reminded me of Stouffer's "Smart Ones" enchilada. The sauce was like orange water. They advertise that they won some award from the Miami Herald. I can't imagine how. This stuff is junk.
