Critic's Review

Texas Hold'em lasted longer than most other places at this location, but ultimately they didn't make it. This space is up for lease; the ad says that the place "has been gutted", which means that it could be empty for a long, long time. Investing money to build out this cursed location would be a dubious endeavor.

Texas Hold Em BBQ Latest Location

Texas Hold'em moved to this location after they (supposedly) got kicked out of the location where Red Cow is now; they used to put their big, ugly smoker by the road which combined with the big ugly "Out of the Closet" building formed one of the ugliest "bends" in South Florida. This particular location has been "cursed" with some of the worst restaurant owners in history: Daryl's, Bo Riley's, Green Fish; finally someone with some business experience has taken over.

I was very happy when they painted over the ugly mural that was on the roof; Bo Reilly's started the trend with a college football logo and Greenfish followed up with a stupid Key West style cartoon. But alas, they again painted the roof with an arguably uglier mural; apparently there are no town ordinances against eye sores in this part of town.

I rarely eat in a BBQ, and my memory of eating in this place was not a good one; so I did take out.

The place is a lot more pleasant than previously; they have some forced decorations like saddles and a functional bar.

They've painted over the bad murals on the walls and on the kitchen doors; the result is a passable dining room.

Although they've moved to a lower budget location; they're charging the same prices as they did at the bend; a 1/2 rack is $18.95 which is more than I was willing to pay for lunch. I went with the spare rib dinner, which is the same thing that I ordered on my first visit to the old barn on SW 7th.

The cool music that used to fill the barn isn't present here; it doesn't really feel like much of a BBQ. One thing that is present; the smell of burning wood. There's a stack of wood in the back with the old rusty smoker; Jeremy is back to basics and it smells pretty good.

The food took a reasonable amount of time, maybe 10 minutes.

The ribs aren't too impressive looking; they're served dry so you can sauce them to taste. My first thought was my recollection of my first Texas Hold'em review, where I raved about the ribs but suggested that they needed

better bread
. They've solved the situation by eliminating the bread; this is one of the only offerings in town without garlic bread or corn bread. No matter to me really; I usually don't eat either anyway.

The proof of the pudding is in the taste, someone once said; and this stuff is Da Bomb; at least in this town. The baked beans are much less sweet than most, with a spicy jalapeno taste. Usually "jalapeno beans" are wholly contrived, but there were excellent. Good mild slaw that wasn't too creamy or sweet; I added some pepper because I like a lot of pepper on my cole slaw. The ribs are VERY smokey; the 4 ribs were surprisingly meaty. Sometimes 4 ribs leaving you looking for another, but this was a satisfying portion.

I didn't care for the ribs I had at "The Bend" location; I think that they got away from doing the things that made this place successful in the first place. I believe they're back, because these are once again the best ribs in town; with good sides as well. I really enjoyed this meal; and those of you who know me know that doesn't happen very often.

I must say the Ribs are the best in this town better than Tom s on federal as to my taste. Do wish they had some cornbead but guess my waistline is better off without it.
