Description

Tony D is Dead.

On July 20, Tony DiCesare of Rochester and namesake of the short-lived Tony D's in Fort Lauderdale is dead of an "apparent heart attack" at his home in Rochester. Tony was 52 years old.

One of the other partners in this restaurant committed suicide a few months ago.

Tony D's Fort Lauderdale

This place is looking like a dud; the menu is up and it's very expensive. It's sort of like an Anthony's of Rochester, but it doesn't appear that they have a coal fire oven at the Fort Lauderdale Location. Imagine if Anthony's opened a location without a Coal Fired Oven? It's the entire point of the place.

Another place to get a $17 12" pizza rolls into town. I think they're going off Martorano's pricing, because they've badly misjudged the pricing for this neighborhood.

Tony D's in Rochester is closing. Just a year ago a popular Rochester Eatery was expanding to South Florida with a shiny new restaurant. A year later, both owners are dead and both restaurants are closed.

The place was locked up tight on Saturday night, April 30th with a sign on the door giving no indication of when they might reopen. Anyone have information on what's happening there?

Someone reported that the place was shut down, but I can't yet corroborate it with any reliable source. I know that one of the owners killed himself a few months ago.

What kind of a fool would pay $41 for mussels, clams and shrimp in a light tomato broth?

Now that I've seen the new, more cohesive menu, I'm convinced that this is an Anthony's copycat at much higher prices. Same wings, same, fairly unique ribs. All without the coal fired oven.

I'm trying to get my head around 12 baked chicken wings for $18. (Anthony's is 10 for $11.50) What a deal!

A closer examination of their menus show that they think they've identified Fort Lauderdale as a Den of Dopes. In Rochester, a 14" "Lucia" coal oven fired pizza is $16. In Fort Lauderdale a 12" non coal fired Lucia is $17. So lets do some math:

14" Pizza: 153 sq inches = $.10 per square inch
12" Pizza: 113 sq inches = $.15 per square inch

50% more expensive in Fort Lauderdale for the non coal-fired pizza

Now you have your choice in the neighborhood for $16 meatballs!

There's a notable rejection of new, overpriced restaurants. Pizzacraft, Boatyard, Thursday's and this place. Hardly any buzz. People are smartening up.

Is Thasos still open?

Apparently they opened last Tuesday. I ate at Lucca on Saturday night, and stopped by this place afterwards. Very expensive indeed. Lowest price entrée is chicken at $31. All the other meat/fish entrees are over $40. This place leans VERY heavy on meat. If you're a vegetarian, forgettaboutit. I think Scolapasta just up the street has executed this Italian concept much, much better. So has Lucca. I doubt this place will last more than one season as these prices, and limited menu.

You can't even go in to try it out. $18 for wings? Another restauranteur who rolls into town and declares themselves the best restaurant in South Florida.

This place is just a pizzeria up in Rochester; where did they get the idea of opening an expensive restaurant in this crappy section of Fort Lauderdale? Watch your wallet at this place; up north they charge like $4 for a soft drink and there are no refills. Maybe with the overpriced food they'll have a different policy here.
