Critic's Review
I was in the area and I'd heard about this little cuban place so I thought I'd stop by and get a cuban sandwich. They don't have much else, except for croquettes. I walked in and asked for a Cubano to go and 2 croquettes (they're .50 each). All out of croquettes. Ok, just the sandwich then.
Not much going on in the place; a counter with a few tables in a non-descript storefront. The owner comes out; he's very chatty. Shake hands, lots of questions. Meanwhile the kid making the sandwich sits down. Tick Tock. The owner gives me a thimble of cuban coffee; espresso milk and a LOT of sugar. I really don't like it, but I didn't want to insult him with his gesture.
Waiting and waiting. This is weird. You only want to melt the cheese, this thing was in the press for 15 minutes.
Just as I was starting to really get annoyed, the kid starts to box up the sandwich. Finally. I went straight home so it was still hot; not much inside the sandwich.
I took a bite. The bread was toasted. Like totally toasted. That's what happens when you leave it on the press too long. It's supposed to be brushed with butter. None of that here.
The sandwich was too much bread and not enough innards. I opened it up to see what was inside.
A good cuban is all about the pork. Just a little slice of ugly looking meat in here. Hardly any pickles. What a disaster. I opened up the other side as another bite wasn't pleasant. I just couldn't taste the multiple flavors that makes a Cubano special.
The cheese wasn't working for me either. I ended up not eating the sandwich. My bad for going into a place like this.
Conclusion
What we have here is some nice people with an idea, but who have no idea how to make the main product that they sell. The coffee I tried was pretty good, but I can't recommend the sandwich. It was perhaps the worst Cuban Sandwich I've ever had. The idea that any Cuban can make a good Cuban Sandwich is simply not the case.
