Description

Todd English is one of those celebrities that has a bunch of restaurants in South Florida that nobody seems to want to go to. The De Campo Osteria in the obscure Il Lugano hotel is a good example. Wild Olives was seemingly the hottest new restaurant opening in Boca 2 years ago; and it turned out to be overshadowed by Rocco's Tacos next door.

It was widely reported that English was morphing his Wild Olives into the English Tap and Beer Garden, but it's not entirely the case. Brio wanted a bigger space than the Mall could accommodate, so it was an opportunity for Wild Olives to shut down and move into the space formerly occupied by Cucina D'Angelo. The space that was Wild Olives is going to be part of the massive new Brio Restaurant, and the English Beer Garden is now towards the rear.

Englishtap bar

My first experience with this restaurant was not a good one, which seems in line with my experience with Wild Olives. They have a nice, fancy website that's broken in a few places, and I noticed that they have a happy hour from 4-6;30pm with half price drinks and 4.95 appetizers. There's no menu specifying which appetizers are on special, but I had to be in Boca so I thought I'd swing by.

So at 4:45 I get to the place and they have some signs advertising their ladies' night and a menu out in the mall; but no mention of their happy hour. So I still have no idea what kind of food I can get.

They have an outside bar and there are a bunch of people smoking and gabbing there, and I'm thinking to myself that it's 92 degrees out and you must be a serious smoker to want to sit outside. They have 2 TVs; neither is on the Yankees-Rays game. Then I realized that the outside bar is the only thing open. The restaurant, and the kitchen, don't open until 5:30. Great, so from 4pm to 5:30 you have 'happy hour' outdoors with no food in the Florida summer.

Their prices are pretty high at this place, and from the pictures on their website, the portions seem small. Maybe I'll stop by next time I'm in the area.

Or maybe not.
