Critic's Review
Another Broken Egg is an upscale Breakfast/Lunch franchise concept which buys into the idea that people are willing to pay more to eat breakfast in a nicer restaurant. It's very similar to the Original Pancake house; perhaps a slightly nicer ambiance; at a higher price point.
Of course everything is Boca is "upscale", because there is no more pretentious area in South Florida. In the front there's a "bar", where I suppose you could eat if you don't like to eat at a table by yourself.
Personally, I prefer a table. The hostess offered me a booth in the rear of the restaurant. It's a big room that doesn't have the little booths that the have at OPH. The place was very loud with only a handful of tables; this place is going to be really LOUD when it's crowded.
The decor is pleasant; there's sort of a copper pot theme, with copper pans on the wall and a copper look under resin on the tables.
I asked for coffee and started to look at the menu. You can get a salad or a burger, but the emphasis is clearly on a brunch-style menu with complicated omelets, benedicts and "scrambles". All of the ones that interested me had one ingredient I didn't want; I don't want avocado on an omelet, and I don't want to eat a tortilla either. I finally decided on Stan's Favorite omelet, which comes with shrimp, crawfish, ham, mushrooms and cheese. Standard is an english muffin and "seasoned country potatoes". For $1.99 extra you can get cheese hash browns, which seems like an extra 200 calories that I didn't really need.
Apparently a big thing here is the fancy cups; it was nice, but the coffee wasn't very good.
Music here is middle of the road; kind of contemporary considering the geriatric clientele in Boca. Think Cheryl Crow and Colbie Caillat.
The omelet came out in about 10 minutes. I got there at 2:30pm and they close at 3, so I had enough time to eat.
Big fluffy omelets; most places don't seem to know how to get them like this. The english muffin was not Thomas', which is all you need to say. For $11.99 I should get a Thomas' muffin. Without the nooks and crannies what's the point? The potatoes reminded me of the "oven baked" potatoes that they have at O/B House; dry and potatoey tasting. I prefer them fried in butter or oil.
The omelet should have been good, but I didn't really like it. It had enough shrimp and crawfish and cheese, but it just didn't taste good. One thing that Shrimp, Crawfish, Mushrooms and Ham have in common is that they all taste good when cooked in butter. This wasn't cooked in butter.
Cheddar isn't the right cheese for shrimp. It just didn't come together.
This whole idea is fine, but high end breakfasts are only good if you cook them properly. You need to cook stuff in butter and/or oil; which is why we love greasy spoon diners, where the food TASTES good, and it's cheap. Now that's a winning combination.
